Octobre

"The fields are harvested and bare, and Winter whistles through the square. October dresses in flame and gold like a woman afraid of getting old." Anne Mary Lawler

Indeed it is Autumn and leaves are colorful and falling. Susan was telling us about their recent trip to Lone Pine Farms to do the haunted maze. Perfect time to be visiting the farms and enjoying fresh apple cider and all the glorious delicious squash and pumpkins. Finally all our green tomatoes are in a paper bag in hopes they will eventually ripen and if not, we enjoy fried green tomatoes.

This is hot tea time and lighting candles and finding that soft afghan or fleecy throw to throw over the legs when watching tv. Halloween decorations cheer up the house and we are reminded of all the ghost stories we heard as kids. All Hallow's Eve still has mystery and magic for me.

Time to feast on nature's bounty and those comfort foods.........back to turning on the oven and smell a delicious roast baking. Eat pumpkin pie this month.....one can never have too much of a good thing. I am making up my Trick or Treat bags and really enjoy the little ones when they come all decked out in their costumes.

On Halloween I will be going to a special tea with friends and we are dressing up a bit. One of our neighbors tells me they have been invited to a Halloween wedding and yes, the bride's colours are black and orange and guests are encouraged to come in costume.

Fall projects

I have been quite busy this month with Fall projects-- in Oregon you gotta' be ready when the rains come. And this year, with me going in for knee surgery October 7th, I won't be able to patch a leaking roof or do much of anything for a month or so.

This photo is of my friend Jesse who helped me fix a leak in the hot tub. We had to use a "farm jack" to hoist the hot tub up two feet in the air and onto some stumps and timbers for support. Then I had to fill it with water and crawl under it to trace down the leak. The tub is about 500 pounds and water weighs 8 pounds per gallon, so it was a bit of a project.

Anyway, the homestead is in good shape and I'm off to Riverbend hospital for my new knee, which I call my Titanium Terminator knee-- the darn thing looks just like the skeletal structure from the Terminator movie.
